Read this if you want an A for Economics!
BY ARINA RAUF
No, the title of this blogpost is not a clickbait. Having been in the JC Economics tuition industry for 15 years with a 95% AB rate, ETG’s programme has undergone constant additions, revisions and tweaks to best prepare you for your A Level Economics journey - whether you are joining us at the start of your junior college journey or nearing the final lap. Read on to find out what it takes to get that elusive A for Economics!
1. Put in more hours - literally.
Curriculum hours are not and never will be enough. Spending about 5 hours a week in school on Economics - a subject that many students have never been exposed to before - is definitely insufficient to get a good grasp of all the content. According to Malcolm Gladwell in his blockbuster book ‘Outliers’, it takes 10,000 hours of intensive practice to achieve mastery of complex skills and materials - that’s enough time in your junior college life! Hence, students who do well in Economics will definitely have put in their blood, sweat and tears time to revise.
At ETG, we offer bite-sized Economics resources in the form of cheatsheets, summary booklets and even videos as well as podcasts (hands up if you’re an auditory learner!) for students to learn Economics on the go. So for those of you who claim that you do not have the time to revise for Economics, we say that even an extra 5 minutes a day is good enough! P.S. Listen to our podcast on Spotify called ‘5 Minutes Economics’.
2. Understand why Economics is life.
This may sound cheesy but what we mean is that Economics is a subject that can be applied to almost every scenario, if not all, in real life! Wondering if you should get that 2-for-1 pizza deal? That’s price discrimination. Heard your parents complaining about COE prices and ERPs while driving? That’s government intervention. Seen many campaigns about vaccination? That’s because vaccines are merit goods.
Economics is a subject that requires application and not just pure memorisation! At ETG, we make Economics more relatable to students by weaving in life experiences and stories as well as daily news tidbits into our lessons which can be used in exams to wow your examiners - no forced memorisation required, just a good understanding and appreciation of the Economics around us. Follow us on our Telegram channel @etgecons to get your daily dose of Economics applied to real life (link)!
3. Ask and you shall receive!
Some students may find their Economics tutors in school unapproachable due to school policies (regarding contact outside curriculum hours) or simply because they are shy and afraid to speak up in class. This becomes a bigger problem as the academic year progresses as previous unclarified doubts and misconceptions will snowball.
At ETG, students are strongly encouraged to ask questions before, during and after lessons - any time and via any platform such as Zoom, WhatsApp or a physical consultation at our centres. What’s more, our online learning management system also has a built-in messaging system where students can submit their work for grading, rewatch missed lessons or download additional notes. Don’t be afraid to ask, and even if you are, you will still receive our quality resources and services at no additional cost!
Like governments employing a mixture of policies to achieve their aims, students who do well for Economics also make use of a mixture of learning strategies. If you are not sure how to learn Economics effectively or if your grades are in dire need of intervention, book a trial class with ETG today!
